TriMark Publications is presenting a one day course consisting of six hours of AACC-approved ACCENT continuing education credits. The course is devoted to improving the knowledge and skill of practicing laboratory testing personnel by addressing practical, everyday topics. Earn half of your annual continuing education credits required by New York State to maintain your license. The material will be presented in an informal lecture fashion that encourages attendee. The program will provide ample opportunity for questions and class discussion. Handouts will be provided.

The program will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009, from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M, at the New York Institute of Technology (16 West 61st Street at Broadway, New York, NY 10023). The course registration (which includes refreshment breaks and lunch) is $195 per registration or $150 for multiple registrations from one institution.

The principal speaker is Harvey George, Ph.D. DABCC, FACB. Dr. George's experience includes:

- Director (current) Calloway Laboratories, Woburn, MA
- Director (retired) State Laboratory Institute, Department of Public Health, Jamaica Plain, MA
- Director (retired) Department of Clinical Laboratories, Lahey Medical Center, Burlington, MA

Dr. George is a recognized authority in quality assurance programs and his credits include invitations from the public health systems of Peru, Russia and the Ukraine to present quality control courses to senior staff members.

This one-day course provides half of the required continuing education credits necessary to maintain your New York State Licensure. The course will address the following topics:

1. Quality: What is It?

- Identify who does quality effects.
- Define the cost of quality.
- Describe the differences between quality control, quality assurance, and continuous quality improvement.

2. Quality Assurance: The Quality Control of Testing

- Identify the components of a quality system.
- Define the policies and procedures that need to be monitored to assure quality.
- Describe the statistics to measure assay performance: ex. the difference between accuracy and precision.

3. Lab Math: QA/QC Practical Exercises

- Identify the principles of the metric system.
- Define the preparation and dilution of solutions.
- Practical experience solving the making of solutions problems.
- Obtain an understanding of significant figures.

4. QA/QC Tools for Process Control

- Identify the commonly used control charts.
- Define the practical application of control charts.
- Describe how control improve analytical quality.
- Solving a practical scenario.

5. Lot-to-lot verification: the Quarantine Process

- Identify the purpose of the quarantine process.
- Define the steps involved in checking out and validate new controls and reagents.
- Describe the advantages to a formal quarantine process.

6. Test Performance

- Identify the criteria for evaluating test performance.
- Define the steps involved in determining sensitivity and specificity.
- Describe the effect of prevalence on predictive value of a test.

7. Westgard Multirules

- Identify the purpose of the multirules.
- Define the process of employing the multirules.
- Describe how applying the rules improves the efficiency of quality control.
